The case of the Hispanic girl María Gómez Pérez continues to progress in the state of Ohio.
Antonio Agustín, originally from Guatemala, is detained as the alleged perpetrator of the kidnapping of María, a 12-year-old girl.
Agustín could face life imprisonment if found guilty of the charges against him.
He will be tried for rape, a crime for which the prosecution seeks a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.
Serious Charges for Antonio Agustín: Life Imprisonment and Severe Sentences in Ohio

The only charge more serious than rape is murder.
If found guilty, Agustín is likely to receive life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Agustín appeared before a judge in Ohio, where he was informed of all the charges against him.
The prosecution in Tuscarawas County made it clear that they will seek the most severe sentences possible.
Among the charges Agustín faces are severe sexual assault using physical force.
He is also accused of obscene behavior for the creation and production of materials for commercial purposes.

Another serious charge is significantly impairing the victim’s ability to reason.
If convicted, he would face life imprisonment for each charge, with the possibility of applying for parole after 25 years.
In the coming weeks, Agustín will have to decide whether to fight the case by pleading innocent or confessing his guilt.
The final decision could be determined at his next hearing before Magistrate Michael Ernest.
